Laser welding gives jewellery business a KickStart

April 29th, 2015

Each year International Jewellery London (IJL) and the British Jewellers’ Association (BJA) put their heads together to select 10 of the most innovative emerging designers in the UK to be named as the recipients of the KickStart Bursary.  Andrew Gold Neilson, with his stunning new range of laser welded jewellery, has been awarded the honour of being one of the KickStarters of 2015 and along with the others will have a display at the IJL Show from 6-8 September 2015.

Having established a career as a Chemical Engineer and then running a specialist jewellery and watch photography business Neilson Photography for 10 years, Andrew decided to turn his creative talent to designing jewellery.  Central to the creation of the Coalescence collection which Andrew is launching in 2015, is the ability to laser weld grains of gold which include pave set or rubover set diamonds.  The collection includes a stunning cocktail ring, Triaurum, which is made from yellow, rose and white gold.  It is hard to imagine how such pieces could be assembled without the use of the ROFIN Desktop laser welder which allows the flexibility to hand hold components under the microscope with the repeatability and consistency of a finely focused laser beam.

The next step is that the 10 KickStart finalists will compete in an online vote (including social media) to choose the KickStart People’s Choice winner.  Voting starts next week on 4 May and ends 1 June – more details on how you can vote for Andrew are at the website:
