However, away from the mainstream use of lasers for precious metal jewellery manufacture, artist David Poston continues to draw inspiration from the technology, breaking new ground in the way in which he uses his Rofin StarWeld laser to produce a diverse collection of stunning rings, bracelets and necklaces.

Try out the latest products from the inventor of the original manual laser welders at the Spring Fair 2012 at the NEC, Birmingham. Visit the Rofin-Baasel UK stand in Hall 18, Stand M75, to discover how easy laser welding is, and try it for yourself. Bring some items with you and you can weld them together yourself with expert supervision. Laser welding is fast, accurate and contact-free – there is minimal heat input and no distortion. Faster and easier than traditional techniques, once you have a welder in your workshop you will wonder how you used to manage without one.

The jewellery industry is renowned as being built upon detailed knowledge of precious metals and gems coupled with intricate manual skills and techniques which have been used for generations. With such a traditional reputation the image of the jewellery designer’s workshop to those outside of the industry, might be considered to be that of a place left behind in the technology race.

In reality however forward thinking, innovative designers and goldsmiths such as David Poston have combined traditional skills and craftsmanship with the latest laser welding technology, to produce intricate and eye catching items which would otherwise be impossible or completely impractical to produce using any other joining process.

Copper is used extensively for interconnections within the electronics industry and welding by laser is an alternative to soldering which gives higher reliability and greater strength than a soldered joint.

Laser welding of copper has traditionally required high peak power pulsed lasers to overcome the inherent high reflectivity and thermal conductivity of the base material. At room temperature copper absorbs as little as 5% of laser light at 1 micron wavelength. A new patented process of mixing in a secondary wavelength at 532nm (only 10-15% of the total energy) enables the absorption of laser energy to be much improved, offering consistent results even where there are differences in the surface condition of the material.
